Honor Societies

Targeting African-American males in grades 9 - 12, the Alpha Achievers is an education program of the Howard County, Maryland Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It fosters a positive learning environment in order to facilitate students’ pursuit of excellence by attaining, maintaining and exceeding a 3.0 grade point average. The minimum requirement for membership is a 3.0 GPA. The program also seeks to encourage and motivate those students who have less than a 3.0 grade point average to strive toward it.

The Delta Scholars program at Atholton promotes continued academic excellence in math, the arts and science in young ladies at AHS, grades 10 – 12 with a 3.0 G.P.A. or better, while providing mentoring and other support required to prepare them for success in college and career.  For more information about the program, please consult the Delta Scholars’ advisers Ms. Edwards at Jennifer_Edwards@hcpss.org or Ms. Oliver at Wanda_Oliver@hcpss.org. 

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), is the only international organization exclusively for high school students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments.

NEHS applications will be accepted from December 1, 2022 until 2:10 pm on December 23, 2022. Applications can be picked up in Room C 148.

National Honor Society (NHS) is a national organization that recognizes students who are leaders in the school.  Besides the academic success indicated by their GPA, students must demonstrate leadership, character and service.  NHS membership is recognized by universities, employers and other institutions as a hallmark of student achievement.  NHS membership comes with responsibility.  Members are expected to maintain their GPA, fulfill leadership roles and offer service to the school and community.  

Rho Kappa is a national group designed to promote and recognize excellence in the study of the Social Studies. In addition, the Society provides opportunities for service, especially through tutoring services. Graduating seniors who have maintained the standards of the Society are awarded the royal blue and white Honor Cord to wear at Commencement.

Students interested in applying for admission to Rho Kappa must possess the stated requirements found in this packet and complete and submit the application by January 8, 2021. Additionally, applicants must obtain two recommendations from Social Studies teachers. These recommendations are also due on January 8, 2021.

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) accepts applications for new members in the fall of each year.  The purpose of the organization is to recognize juniors and seniors who have excelled while pursuing a technical curriculum at Atholton HS, and to give back to the Atholton community through technical service.  Member selection is based on technical coursework, GPA and character. The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members world wide and nearly a million members since its inception in 1984.  Awarding over $2 million in scholarships to date, NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive, skilled workforce.

The Science NHS chapter of Atholton High School works to promote science in the school and community. Members of the Science NHS also sponsor a science tutoring network for fellow Atholton Students that need assistance with their classwork
